I just finished this one. One word, then a few others.....WOW!
I enjoyed every single story in this collection. I've made it pretty clear this past year that I'm a O'Neill fan, but this book just cemented my feelings.
The Burden of Indigo, as I've commented before, is excellent and such a great set up for the following tales in the book. And as I moved from story to story, it was exciting to find the characters outlined in the previous stories showing back up to play their parts even further.
As I progressed through The Burden of Indigo to The Armless Conductor to Mojave Transfer to The Scarlet Man...it really did remind me of a Stephen King phenomenon where you find hints and clues and references to The Dark Tower books. Even in completely unrelated books. Frankly, I love that shit. :-)
The characters are great--well done--the scenery is everything you'd wish for from a post-apocalyptic tale, and thank the Gods Cal Wild isn't dead yet......man, I hope it never dies.
The Scarlet Man actually rivals The Burden of Indigo as my favorite in this collection. Both--and all the stories--are excellent.
Impressive, Gene. I'll probably be reading this one again real soon. :-)

Thanks for the kind words, Chris. John: You are right, if things work out, the Cal Wild trilogy will come out in 2012: THE CONFESSIONS OF ST. ZACH, THE BURDEN OF INDIGO, AND THE CAL WILD CHRONICLES. I think over 300 K words in all. Gene

Think I may do that after I'm done with my current book. ~C
