Issue 2. Amanda's Gift. Brett McBean.
This story, one of my favorites from Brett, convinced me that it was about time for a whole collection...

Any one of the first twelve. The last four do nothing for me.

Spring 2005 issue, if for no other reason that James Newman's "Dirty Black Summer." One of the most powerful pieces of fiction I ever read. It was not collected in Newman's excellent collection People are Strange, so if you want to read it--and trust me, you want to read it--see if there are any back issues of this one around.

I'm gonna say issue number 1. It was a wonderful surprise to see such a fabulous new magazine.

Thanks John! I was really happy to see the positive response when Dark Discoveries debuted. Things came together nicely to make it a nice looking little magazine with glossy pages and some good content. My first design guy Dave Emrich really did a great job on the layout and established an identity for it. I got really lucky with that one! Liz Engstrom was incredibly kind and Doug Clegg tolerated my major fauspax as well. Honestly, I thought I might have to run one or two of my own stories under a pseudonym, but fortunately I ended up getting some good stuff from others. Bill Gauthier's "The Umbrella People" is still one of my favorites today. Not too bad for a guy who hardly knew anybody in the small press, let alone the bigger ones. I just took it seriously myself and other people did as well. Hard to believe that was 6 1/2 years ago now! - James www.darkdiscoveries.com
