Just curious, for those of you who have purchased and read my new Sideshow book that collects the novellas WHISONANT and CREATURES OF THE LIGHT, which one did you like the best? Feel free to not just vote but to give your thoughts on what made you choose the one you did. I love feedback, as you all know.

Nothing real specific since both stories are cool. I just thought Creatures showcased stronger writing than Whis. Both are excellent.

I threw in my vote for Whisonant, Mark, for the reasons I already gave you: little better written, nicely-woven tale explaining Suzie's motives, and great twist ending! Well done!

Much stronger writing. I got the impression that Whisonant was written later as the style seemed more developed, but it might have been down to editing, too.

You are right, WHISONANT was written 2009, CREATURES 2005 or so. I will also say CREATURES had very little tinkering, whereas WHISONANT was heavily revised and actually given an entirely different ending from the original draft.

Mark, I just finished Creatures of Light. Just when I started to really get into the characters it was over. I definitely feel this could have been, or can be, a longer work, a full-length novel. Janelle is definitely a character strong enough to build a novel around. Perhaps a sequel? A prequel? Put it all together and there you have it.
I did like Whisonant more. It's a more complete story with a great twist at the end. Creatures felt a bit condensed, with scenes occurring off camera and only talked about. I wanted to know more, see more. Which is a good thing.
Overall, for the price of admission, Whisonant/Creatures of Light is an entertaining double bill.

Thanks for the kind words, Kurt. A sequel or prequel to CREATURES, huh? I've never really thought about it, but you never know, someday we just might catch up with Janelle and Rudy...

Hi Mark, recently read these.
I preferred Whisonant - Creatures didn't give you the opportunity to draw the characters as fully, which is a shame, because as someone pointed out earlier in this thread, I was beginning to believe in them towards the end - also the initial creature attack was sudden, like the beginning of the Korean movie The Host, but never really explained and as a result felt a little random... something tells me it could have been like King's The Mist if it had more of a brooding atmosphere and slow burn before all hell literally breaks loose with the emergence of the creatures - Whisonant had a cool narrative structure, felt more fully formed and had a really neat twist. Also, Whisonant had atmosphere which you handled very well and you did extremely well to make the lead character sympathetic, even at her most maudlin.
However, I DID like them both and I really liked the 'jump cut' scene in Creatures where the travelling party are coming back from a sortie and everything's gone to shit.
Will be buying more of your work, for sure.
PS: liked the ol' lady character a lot...
