A message from Yvonne Navarro:
As some folks know, and most don't, earning money as a writer is a tough thing. The Stephen Kings and Nora Roberts of the world are not at all common, and most full time writers can't afford health or life insurance. If they do have it, lean times often force them to cross their fingers and let go of payments for stuff like that. Tragically, that's exactly what my friends, Rick Hautala and Holly Newstein Hautala did a couple of months ago. If you can help out with a dollar or two, check out Christopher Golden's post about it here: christophergolden.blogspot.ca/2013/03/if-you-want-to-help-holly-newstein.html. Or perhaps pick up one of Rick's books-- you can find them online. An excellent writer, he was the recipient of an HWA Life Achievement Award last year.
Here's Pete from Evil Jester Press:
For all of 2013, Evil Jester Press and I are forfeiting our royalty stake in MOONDEATH. All profits will now roll to Holly Newstein Hautala. The book is now selling well, which would have made Rick happy. MOONDEATH was his first novel, and it's one of my favorites. When EJP reprinted it, Rick wanted to stick to original 1980 Zebra text. The two months I spent retyping the text from the old mass market paperback, not to mention the several times I reread the manuscript, was a journey I'm glad I took. Typing the same words (in the same order) on my PC that Rick Hautala had typed decades earlier...well, that was cool. We will do more. This is a start.
Chris from Dark Regions:
In honor of Rick Hautala we will be making his new book GLIMPSES: The Best Short Stories of Rick Hautala free in the Kindle marketplace starting tomorrow. Here's the link: www.amazon.com/Glimpses-Short-Stories-Hautala-ebook/dp/B00AEGD5EI
From Doug -
I think it was about 12 years ago I first heard of Rick, and it was likely through Cemetery Dance. I'm proud of the fact that Rick sent me his M/S for WILDMAN. I did some work on it, not ask to, and he was so grateful he sent me a signed copy. When I got it, I saw he also had my name put in and thanked me for my 'eagle eye.' This was in the FULL MOON edition.
I have bought a few more of Rick's books, including 'Glimpses' which is free today and tomorrow. (23rd & 24th)
Because needs some help now, how about everyone buy one of her or one of Rick's books?
