I don't think we're doing the deluxe version. We were going to, but there were only a few preorders for it and it made the printing and binding cost go through the roof (fewer books and the cost goes way up).

what about a Deluxe (or any version of) The Unseen, or a HC of Breaking Eggs? I have an Unseen ordered from way back, and thought there was to be a HC of Breaking Eggs, so I was skipping the the TPB, so if there isn't going to be one, I need to pick it up.

Hey, all.

We'll be putting out an email soon about this, but I'll explain a little here as well.

Although I LOVE designing our deluxe editions, and I like to think that we do some of the nicest ones in the small press, the sales for these premium books have been awful. It's not the authors at all, as sales have been poor across the board with new and established authors. I know that these guys have been working their asses off to get sales, but the buyers just aren't there. Why spend $70 on the fancy version when you can get the trade paperback or digital edition for a fraction of that price a few months down the road?

I think that the economy took a big chunk out of many collectors' disposable incomes, and many of these folks have drastically slowed down their buying or have quit all together. Due to the production values, our books tend to be pricey, and I don't think most people are willing (or able) to justify spending $60-$75 for a book anymore.

Now, we've tried reducing print runs on these editions from 100 to 50, then down to 30, but it doesn't seem to matter. We've also considered binding up only what sells. After all, if a book sells only 12 copies, then the people who bought it would get a true collector's item. However, the fewer books we bind, the higher the cost, per book. That drives the costs to produce each copy through the roof. We could also consider putting out "cheaper" editions, but then I would have to cut corners and produce, in my opinion, an inferior book. even then, the price might STILL be too high.

What to do..?

Unfortunately, we are looking at cancelling some of the Deluxe editions of our books. Now I HATE doing this, as a lot of time and effort has already been put into them, and I know that the handful of people who reserved them are eagerly anticipating these books, but it just doesn't make sense to publish a title knowing that a) the audience for the edition is just a few people and b) by binding the book, we're going to lose hundreds of dollars and have dozens more unsold copies sitting on the shelves.

So, for the time being, here is what is going on:

As mentioned, the deluxe edition of TALES FROM THE SIGNAL BLOCK has been cancelled for the time being. Frank Duffy was incredibly understanding of the decision, and we've since published a more affordable Gallows edition in an effort to get this book in more hands. As for MOUNTAINS OF SMOKE, we will be putting out a very affordable trade edition of this early next year.

THE UNSEEN trade is available, and the deluxe is on hold at the moment. I will be contacting those who pre-ordered soon to see if they are still interested, and trying to do one more push to get the numbers up to a point where it will be worth binding up. I had some fantastic ideas for this one, but they were going to be pricey, and interest for this edition was not very high.

The BREAKING EGGS has not been cancelled, but we're putting it on hold. Kurt and L.L. are working on a prequel to the original novel, and that will be published as a stand-alone trade and as part of a deluxe that includes both novellas, a bonus story, and author commentary. This edition may be a ways down the road, however.

Now, we are not closing Sideshow, but we are going to spend some time evaluating how to proceed with it next year. We've got some ideas, including filling the deluxe editions with a ridiculous amount of bonus content (like in the case of BREAKING EGGS), or maybe creating some sort of sliding price point and a made-to-order system. Truthfully, I can't imagine NOT making any more of these fine editions, so we'll be trying to determine how to best move ahead and make the Sideshow arm of our publishing operation work.

Anyhow, I hope this explains some things. As I mentioned earlier, we will soon be reaching out to those who still by the deluxe editions to get some feedback.

Ohhhh noooooo...
This is somewhat depressing but I do hope things work out where you can keep publishing good books. You really truly do produce some of the finest limited editions out there and the fiction is also great. If the economy rebounds I know SP and the Moran's will be there to publish great books in s/l's again.
