Tonight I got a Camelot Books newsletter. I wasn't interested in any of the offerings. It just set me off a little looking at their inflated prices. I was reminded of when I had previously expressed interest in buying one title. Later I learned they had tried to charge my credit card for that book, but couldn't because that credit card was outdated. I recently asked about another book and was asked to provide credit card info. I'm wary about doing this after what happened before. I guess if I want to buy anything from Camelot Books I'll have to look into their policies and see if I can pay by money order (And maybe unsubscribe from their email newsletter too). *Rant*, *Grumble*

WOW - I'm surprised about your credit card experience. I can't help but wonder if it was a miscommunication.
I haven't bought that much from Camelot (I like to use cheap Media Mail or free S/H), but Kim has always made the purchases a pleasure. She has always gone above and beyond to answer my questions and provide excellent customer service.

I remembered I can also see if Paypal is an option.

This didn't happen to me with Camelot, but three other highly respected publishers have added add'l S/H costs (w/o my approval) to my charge card. I've been paying with Paypal ever since.

I buy from Camelot all the time, and they've been pretty great.
One thing of note, if you buy a book and it's a pre-order they will not charge for the book until it's ready to ship. So if you order it and one month later the book comes out that's when they try to charge your credit card. Maybe that was what happened?
The one grip I have with Camelot is if a book is sold out pre-publications they'll jack up the price on their stock (not always but on important ones they do). Which sucks because it's still a pre-order. But, they are in the business to make money so I can't complain too much.

I do not buy from Camelot that often but when I have, I have had no issues. They have always been very quick to respond to my emails, usually within hours. I do get annoyed at booksellers that jack up prices as mentioned above and/or charge very high shipping costs. There are 3 online booksellers that I only buy from if I am desperate because of this. I have also been limiting purchases at the horror mall because of high shipping costs. They removed the air mail option to Canada and only offer priority (which, by the way, does not get me the book any quicker). If Larry and Bad Moon stop offering bulk shipping to their international customers, I will definitely be cutting back. I refuse to pay $15.00 shipping for a single book unless I am desperate for it. That is why I never ordered the new Greg Gifune from Uninvited Books. Dark Regions and Thunderstorm are two publishers that offer discounted shipping to Canada, love, love, love what they publish so buy direct from them. And yes, I do buy from Amazon.ca when I can - free shipping and I don't have to pay customs fees. example:Occasional Demons from CD: book bought from US bookseller $40.00 +$2.00 exchange rate+ $15.00 shipping plus $7.00 customs fee + $6.00 taxes = $70.00. Same book bought from Amazon with usual hardcover discount: $26.00 CAN + $3.60 tax +free shipping = $29.60. even without the discount it would be $42.00 + $6.00 tax = $48.00. Pet peeve of mine, can you tell?

I had not said I would buy the book in question. It's just that I was irritated when I learned they had apparently tried to charge my credit card. Steve

Pet peeve of mine, can you tell? I have to agree with Bookie. I've bought tons of books over the last ten years, even with 40% exchange. But now, I can't afford as much as I used to. I buy a fair amount from Amazon also. I usually wait until I know there's more I want so I can get the free shipping. I've also started to buy books for my Kindle on a Mac. (Gord Rollo's newest is one) Just last week I paid (through paypal) $25.00 USD for shipping for one book. I have always bought first books. I feel the author's first needs to be supported, but with the mailing costs in Canada & US I'm not sure how long I can afford to do this. I just started to buy from Dark Regions and quite happy with the costs thus far. There are many times I'll buy from the UK because it has a faster arrival time and is far cheaper than North America. I bought a few King books from the UK because I like their sizes and cover art more than from here. Anyway, just my 2.5 cents worth. ;D

That sucks because shipping to Canada and the UK wasn't that bad a few years ago, but the USPS jacked up the prices and its expensive to ship out, but everyone can ship into the US at a fair price still. It's pretty confusing when other countries can still ship into the US cheap but not the other way around.
