Hope to have this one in to 1st readers before I head south to do battle with the two ragamuffins in a week. Long novella--maybe 32K words. Of course there is a story-line, but the major focus is similar to HEART OF DARKNESS, where Conrad gave us a *sense* of the Belgian Congo before most folks even knew where it was located. I'm trying to give the reader the *feel* of Borneo at this time. Each of the major sections has a Joseph Conrad epigram that sets the stage for that section. If I'm successful eventually with readers, the extra time I've put in will be worth it to me (ofc the money won't justify it). So it goes, Gene

Okay got 32K words all down on ORH. Now 3 or 4 days polishing, then off to the 1st readers. Two weeks should be the hands of an interested publisher. Also sent off a very edgy short story solicited by an anthology. "Transformations at the Inn of the Golden Pheasant." think I got the narrative voice down pretty well on this--and in this kind of piece, narrative voice is critical. So, we'll see.

Good for you, John. I know I can count on you for support.
Leigh: Great to hear you pop up again, and with nice things to say about my work. Thanks, ah...mate (that's still difficult for us Americans to say).
Gene

Hi Gene - yes, been absent with lots of things on my plate. Only going to stop by infrequently, but I do needs to keep up with what's happening. I use mate so much these days, I may get myself in trouble next time I am over there

Leigh, as always Bob is right on. I think most of us American writers take "mate" as a compliment from our Aussie, Kiwi, or Brit pals. Gene

OPERATION RHINOCEROS HORNBILL may be out as early as October, with a cover by my pal, GAK. S/L hardback and a Deluxe. I'm anxious to see how this one strikes readers--attempt to combine a real adventure story with a kind of literary emulation of Conrad's HEART OF DARKNESS. If that works for anyone here, you might get in your pre-order when they open. I notice THUNDERSTORM books sell out quickly.
